Periodontics is a specialized branch of dental care that relates to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease that affects the gums and jawbone. The gum tissues surround and provide support to the teeth, while the underlying jawbone anchors teeth firmly in place. Periodontists have passed through several years of additional dental training and are devoted to maintaining the function, health, and appeal of the jawbone and tissues.
Reasons for periodontal treatment
Periodontal disease is an extended condition that starts with mild gum inflammation known as “gingivitis.” This condition needs to be taken very seriously because it is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults living in the developed world. Also known as “gum disease” periodontal disease is usually identified by red, painful, swollen, or bleeding gums. However, some cases of periodontal disease don’t have any visible symptoms.
Periodontal disease usually starts when the bacteria present in the plaque cause an infection in the tissues surrounding the teeth, thereby causing them to become painful and irritated. In the long run, this infection will force the jawbone to recede and make the tooth weak.
There are a couple of reasons why periodontal treatment might be required, check them out below:
- Moderate/advanced gum disease – This happens when the gums are bleeding, red or swollen around most teeth and the jawbone has started to recede.
- Localized gum recession – The infection which procreates moderate or severe gum disease usually starts in one area. Gum recession can also be triggered due to excessive brushing with a hard bristle brush, or due to a poorly positioned tooth. To prevent it from progressing, immediate treatment is required.
- Crown lengthening – The periodontist might lengthen the visible portion of the tooth by adjusting surrounding soft and hard tissue to provide adequate room for more tooth exposure. This is to help the subsequent crown or restoration to fit better and be more retentive.
- Cosmetic Periodontal Procedures – Also referred to as “recontouring”, this procedure might be required to fix an uneven gum line. Before commencing treatment, a periodontist needs to treat any bacterial infections and periodontitis.
For mild/moderate periodontal problems, the attention of the periodontist will be on curing the primary bacterial infection and then providing expert advice on the best suitable home cleaning methods.
In some instances, a deep scaling is needed to remove the bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and tissues. In cases where periodontal disease is advanced, and the jawbone has regressed significantly, more intensive cleaning might be suggested, and any weakened teeth that cannot be saved will be extracted.
The periodontist is well trained in different areas of dental implant procedures, capable of restoring full functionality to the mouth, particularly when the teeth have affected have been plagued by periodontitis.
Also, because periodontal disease is continuous, it is necessary to remove the bacteria and calculus build up to stop the spread of the infection.
